FOUNDATIONS PELVIC HEALTH | FAQS
Discover answers to our most commonly asked questions.
What should I expect at my first visit?
At your first visit, you can expect a thorough review of your medical history, your current symptoms, and a discussion of your goals. You will receive a comprehensive orthopedic examination, and if indicated due to your complaints, you may be recommended for an internal exam (vaginal or rectal). Aspects of the pelvic floor muscles are only able to be examined through an internal exam, but there are always other techniques that can be utilized — you will ALWAYS have the right to decline an internal assessment, without question. Expect your practitioner to be thorough in their evaluation techniques, as well as provide education and information regarding your diagnosis and prognosis.
Do you accept insurance?
At Foundations Pelvic Health, we are an out-of-network provider, meaning that we do not partner with any insurance companies, and thus are not restricted by any insurance limitations. Payment is due at the time of services rendered, meaning you will never receive surprise medical bills from us. Your sessions will be one-on-one, with attention focused completely to you and your needs, which the traditional insurance framework does not allow. Upon request, we do provide ‘superbills’, which you are welcome to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement - please confirm with your individual insurance company on their requirements. You are also able to use your FSA/HSA account.
Do I need a prescription or referral?
In the state of Massachusetts, you do not need a physician referral or prescription for physical therapy services. Please check with your insurance company to verify if you will need to provide one for reimbursement.
I have Medicare- are you able to see me?
Unfortunately at this time, Foundations Pelvic Health is not able to see Medicare or MassHealth patients for physical therapy services. However, we are able to provide health and wellness services (i.e. bodywork services, private yoga classes).
Do you only treat the pelvic floor?
Here at Foundations Pelvic Health, we do not only look at one isolated body part. We treat with a whole-body approach. Foundations’ pelvic floor physical therapists have extensive knowledge of orthopedic conditions as we recognize that everything is connected.
How soon after delivery should I come see you?
We recommend waiting until you are 6 weeks postpartum or with clearance from your medical provider before coming into pelvic floor physical therapy, but you are welcome to come in sooner if you are having issues.
I’m pregnant but don’t have any issues. What would be some benefits of pelvic floor physical therapy for me?
So much! Every mama-to-be should see a pelvic floor therapist, as we are the experts of this area. Pelvic floor physical therapy can help to decrease perineal tearing, teach appropriate breathing techniques and positions for labor and delivery, optimize your strength, flexibility and body mechanics throughout your pregnancy to keep you pain-free and mobile, and also prepare you to have decreased complications after delivery.
What is Functional Dry Needling?
Functional dry needling is a technique utilized to help in management of neuromusculoskeletal pain or movement impairments, where a monofilament needle is inserted into a painful muscle or trigger point to help reduce muscle tension and improve pain. Practitioners at Foundations Pelvic Health have sought post-graduate education and training in this treatment. Typically part of a larger treatment plan, Foundations may utilize this technique to help you achieve your goals. Patients that have found relief with dry needling may benefit from occasional ‘tune-ups.’
Do you offer mentorships or continuing education for physical therapists?
Donna offers professional mentorship to physical therapists who are new to the specialty field of pelvic health physical therapy, providing clinical information, hands-on instruction, and guidance with complex cases. Please inquire with specific needs or questions.
